Women empowered and celebrated

23 August 2023

The City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department (SD&ECD) hosted a successful event to celebrate Women’s Month on Saturday, 19 August 2023 at the Civic Centre in Cape Town where participants had the opportunity to take part in various empowerment and therapeutic/relaxation activities.

SD&ECD invited 150 women between the ages of 14 and 35  representing community organisations working with young women across the metro. The day's programme focused on the empowerment of young women with a focus on Gender Based Violence(GBV) and services available to adolescents and young women experiencing any form of trauma.

The event was hosted by SD&ECD with organisations that the City has a working relationship with, including Molo Songololo, Pride Shelter, Equilibrium, Mosaic and Callas Foundation, among others.

The activities included guest speakers, inputs and information on GBV awareness and services available, the importance of mental health and counselling, entrepreneurial opportunities, art therapy, yoga and meditation, massaging, nail art, beading and entertainment by young women artists.

'It's encouraging to see that so many women participated in the event. Women's Month and the programmes that the City provides is about creating opportunities and increasing awareness of the important role that women fulfil in communities. It also provides young women with a platform to engage with each other, exchange ideas and  to have access to therapeutic and relaxation activities,' said the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Service and Health,'  said Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.
